Bruised, battered, bandaged: Berlusconi emerges for a shopping trip after attack (fonte Times)

Anche sul Times!
Silvio Berlusconi has made his first public appearance since he was attacked in Milan last month, turning up unexpectedly at a shopping centre near the city with bandages on his injured face.

The Italian Prime Minister, who had an annus horribilis in 2009 with a series of sex scandals and renewed corruption charges, was badly hurt when a man hurled a metal souvenir of Milan Cathedral at him on December 13.

Mr Berlusconi, who was a cruise ship crooner before making a fortune in property and television, is reported to have spent the weeks of enforced rest composing love songs for a new CD with Mariano Apicella, the Neapolitan guitarist who has accompanied him on three albums since 2003.

The Prime Minister had said that he would make no public appearances until next weekend but, evidently, changed his mind. On New Year’s Eve he spent two hours at a shopping centre in Villasanta, near his villa at Arcore, on the outskirts of Milan.
It was reported that Mr Berlusconi, 73, was applauded by shoppers at the Il Gigante hypermarket. Salvatore Esposito, the head of security at the shopping centre, said that the Prime Minister had arrived at 4pm surrounded by bodyguards, with dressings on his cheek and a bandage on his lip. He had a cup of coffee in the centre’s café and bought items in a luggage and handbag shop.

Mr Berlusconi suffered a fractured nose, two broken teeth and severe cuts to his gums and lips when Massimo Tartaglia, 42, a mentally disturbed local man who accused him of “ruining Italy”, hurled the souvenir at him at the end of a rally. The Prime Minister said that he forgave Mr Tartaglia “on a human level” but asked that the courts “make an example of him”.

The rally was to launch a drive to recruit one million new members for Mr Berlusconi’s People of Liberty party, which is gearing up for regional elections at the end of March. Campaign posters are to carry the slogan “Love always wins over hate”.

Mr Berlusconi’s office denied reports that election posters would carry images of his bruised and bloodied face. However, it has emerged that his party’s campaign song is to be changed in an apparent effort to soften his image.

The existing party anthem has the refrain “Meno male che Silvio c’è”, roughly “Thank God that Silvio exists”. Aides now believe that this focuses excessively on one man. It is to be changed to “Meno male che noi ci siamo” or “Thank God we exist”.

Grazie
